What is the difference between an adult family home and an assisted living facility?

Both  facilities are very much alike.  However, there are two things that differentiate  one from the other – the size of the facility and the cost.  Assisted living facilities are much larger in size, typically ranging from 50 - 250 residents.  Adult family homes are much more personalized and intimate, often ranging from 3 - 6 residents. 

What is the difference between an adult family home and a traditional nursing home?

Nursing homes typically provide round-the-clock acute skilled care versus an adult family homes offering daily supervision and assistance with daily living, such as bathing, eating, mobility, and  more.   Residents of  an adult family homes are people who cannot live independently but generally do not require the skilled care provided by nursing homes.

  • Adult family homes naturally have fewer staff members which offers an increased staff to resident ratio.  This means residents get used to seeing the same people and form closer relationships with caregivers  and staff.  


  • Adult family homes are often more suitable for individuals with special needs such as a doctor-mandated diet or physical exercise regime or those with cognitive disability such as dementia.
